Initial Height Ideas

Because DC has such an emphasis on the views of and from the mall, I am starting to think about what is actually visible. An initial idea was to draw a site line from the south side of the mall, across the mall to the top of the Museum of Natural History, which is on axis with our site, and continuing up above our site. I wanted to see how high a building could be before a person exiting the Smithsonian Institution Building could see it. Before it could affect views from the mall, a tower on this site would have to be roughly 400 feet tall.

Of course, this doesn't take into account respecting the already established height limit, a "precious zone", pedestrian light access, or other issues. I was concerned with the initial point that a view would be affected.

  1. Also...I'm curious to know where a viewer can actually see the DC skyline from, besides from a helicopter. I don't think that I've ever seen it in person.
